Cold and snowy winters in Michigan make for a great skiing vacation. The populated Detroit Metro area draws a number of locals and tourists to its highly reviewed ski resorts. Whether you’re a novice or an expert, skier or snowboarder, Detroit winter resorts are available in a number of areas.
Detroit skiing is just a fraction of the appeal of vacationing in Michigan. Although the slopes are not as prestigious and challenging as those found in Vail, Aspen, or Canada, Michigan has wonderful resorts. Many of the highly regarded Metro ski resort locations can be reached within an hour of Detroit including the most popular skiing attraction Alpine Valley.

Pine Knob Ski Area
Located in Southeast Michigan in the city of Clarkston, Pine Knob is one of the prime locations for skiing in the area. The resort has a TOPGUN snowmaker fleet which means that Pine Know opens early, recovers from thaws quickly and stays open late into the season for some spring skiing action. The resort has three parks for snowboarding including a beginner, intermediate, and advanced. All trails are lighted for beautiful night skiing. Pine Knob also offers ski and snowboard school.
Alpine Valley Ski Area
A short distance from Detroit is the largest and most beautiful ski area in southeast Michigan. Alpine Valley Ski Area is home to 25 slopes ranging from beginner to expert. Snowboarding experts will enjoy the advanced area which features a large half pipe along with ramps and rails for tricks. The resort also features the Hornet’s nest Lounge where patrons can enjoy drinks, dancing, and a view of the slopes.
Mt. Holly
Mount Holly has 18 different slopes fitting the needs of a wide skill set of skiers. The resort also features a newly developed terrain park for a unique experience. The resort has outstanding snow making and grooming as well as a large chairlift capacity. Located in the city of Holly about one hour north of Detroit, Mt. Holly also offers ski and snowboard school.
Mt. Brighton Ski Area
Complete with 130 acres of skiable terrain, 250 feet vertical drop, 26 runs, 7 chairlifts, and 11 surface tows makes Mt. Brighton one of the larger resorts in the Metro Detroit Area. Located 49 miles from the city, the resort also includes a snowboard terrain park with an extended half pipe. Night skiing, race programs, rental shops, and a lodge with a full service restaurant makes Mt. Brighton a great Michigan skiing experience.
